As N Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) is going to retire on April 20, Navin Chawla is going to take over as the next CEC
after the retirement of Gopalaswami.
Chawla, an IAS officer of the 1969 batch, will hold charge till July 29, 2010 when he will attain the age of 65 years.
A spokesmen of Rashtrapati Bhavan said that "The President has approved the appointment of Navin Chawla as the Chief Election
Commissioner with effect from April 20 on completion of the tenure of N Gopalaswami."
