ITF (International Tennis Federation) honoured World No.1s Rafael Nadal of Spain and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia were named on Wednesday as World Champions for 2008.
Nadal, a 22 year old who won the French Open, Wimbledon and also Olympic gold in Beijing atop the rankings, and became the first Spanish man to be named men's World Champion. "It has been an incredible year for me and I will never forget all that's happened," Nadal said.
Jelena Jankovic becomes the Serbia's first tennis World Champion in singles after securing the year-end No. 1 ranking in a standout year.
The 23-year-old also represented her country at the Olympics and in the Fed Cup, where she helped Serbia qualify for the World Group for the first time ever.
